Main page problems![]

At my Wikia the main page includes the codes "|- | style="color:#000;" |" how can I remove those from the main space? Thanks! AJona1992 01:35, August 18, 2011 (UTC)

How's that? Tardis1963 04:02, August 18, 2011 (UTC)
I saw the problem and fixed it, should be okay now. *Bereisgreat (shout!) 13:59, August 18, 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. AJona1992 03:33, August 19, 2011 (UTC)

I uploaded this file onto my Wiki to appear as the main logo instead of Wi[k]ia. How long do I need to wait before this takes effect? Also, did I formatted it correctly? Thanks, AJona1992 11:51, August 20, 2011 (UTC)

Hi AJona. That filename (Wiki.png) is used for monobook, not the Wikia skin (see here): the maximum size for Wiki.png is, I believe, 150 by 150. I can't find the exact dimensions anywhere, but it's way too big. What you are probably looking for is Wiki-wordmark.png, which is a maximum of 250 by 65 and is the logo when using the default Wikia skin. Cook Me Plox 15:36, August 20, 2011 (UTC)
I got a smaller size (uploading it now) but are you telling me that the logo will only be viewed if I use the default layout? AJona1992 15:57, August 20, 2011 (UTC)
Not exactly. I hope I'm not telling you what you already know, but there are two skins on Wikia: "Wikia" and monobook. Wikia is the default skin for everyone, and monobook can only be changed in personal preferences. Monobook uses Wiki.png for the logo, so unless you and the rest of your wiki uses Monobook, very few people will see it. The logo file for the Wikia skin is Wiki-wordmark.png, which is of different dimensions than the logo you uploaded. That's what all visitors will see as the logo unless they're using monobook. News template error[]

I am not sure why this project page is not showing up on the front page of my wiki. Thanks for helping out! AJona1992 17:38, August 22, 2011 (UTC)

Where would you like it to show up? Like, where exactly on the main page? – zzi 17:40, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
Where the Earth icon is located at. Thanks, AJona1992 17:43, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
Is it how you'd like it? – zzi 17:46, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
Yes, is there a way I can limit it to have 3-4 news articles? AJona1992 17:47, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
To limit it to 3-4 articles, you have to edit this page so that it's just three or four entries. – zzi 17:50, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for everything! Have a great day, AJona1992 17:54, August 22, 2011 (UTC)
No problem. – zzi 17:54, August 22, 2011 (UTC)

Why aren't images uploading?[]

Hello,

I have been trying to upload a newer version of this file however, every time I do it uploads very slow (10%, 20%, 60%, 90%, etc) and when its done it doesn't upload. Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks, AJona1992 14:21, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

The image cache has been acting up lately. Your file likely has been uploaded, but won't display. User:Monchoman45/SigReal
As Monchoman said, if there is a new entry in the version list, your file has been uploaded and cache problems prevent it from being displayed. You should wait some time (up to 1-2 days) before starting to worry. Deleting previous versions of the file wont help. Hunter789 14:29, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, AJona1992 15:14, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
Fixing image re-uploads is currently the highest bug priority for our engineers. I expect this to be fixed within the next 24 hours. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 17:11, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
This seems to get broken every few months or so. Hopefully the latest fix is more permanent. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Aug 2011 9:01 PM Pacific
Thanks for everyone who responded. Unfortunately, images of artwork are not uploading. Hopefully everything will be fixed but I am patient :) AJona1992 14:43, August 25, 2011 (UTC)
Everyone who runs into this bug should not be patient. Please submit a complaint to Special:Contact either from here or on their wiki. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 28 Aug 2011 9:26 PM Pacific

Signatures and referencing issues[]

On my wiki every article that has a source example shows the link with its desired name and again with the URLs exposed. How can I fix this? Another problem is why when I use ~~~~ it only show my username, time and date but not my talk page? Thanks, AJona1992 15:12, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

I don't see any problem in that page; there is no URL exposed at all.

Your signature is set in your preferences. What do you have there? User:Nidek/Sig1 15:34, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

Alright I'll fix that in my preferences thanks. In that page, you can see ref#7 "Amor Prohibido AMG Picks" however, right on the same ref it also gives the full URL to the site. Shouldn't it only be linked in the name? AJona1992 15:46, August 25, 2011 (UTC)
It looks like your template w:c:selenaquintanilla:Template:Cite web has incomplete support. I looked at the templates it uses and it seems to be missing Template:Em and Template:Tnull. I don't know if they are required, but you picked a super complicated version of Template:Cite web. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 26 Aug 2011 8:57 PM Pacific

Monobook layout[]

I have been trying to lure in people to my wiki however, since the default layout is "New Wikia Look", it keeps driving people away. (1) The layout is hard to navigate through all the freely ads that are on each side, (2) it's not very attractive and makes people want to leave, (3) not EVERY ONE in the world knows how to change their layouts through their 'preferences' and is hard to navigate to use nor do everyone in the world knows how to easily edit and save a article. How can I permanently disable the "New Wikia Look" when new users arrive to my wiki? If this is possible, if not, is there any other way that I can get this done? Thanks, AJona1992 22:12, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

Not possible, you can only do it through preferences. You can encourage editors to change to monobook but you cannot switch them yourself.--User:Godisme/Sig2
Alright, are there any other layout besides these two that are similar to Wikipedia? AJona1992 22:53, September 2, 2011 (UTC)
Monobook and Oasis are the only skins there are, with some proper css though, you can change Monobook into Vector, Wikipedia's skin.--User:Godisme/Sig2
I'm not too smart about css codes. But thanks for your help anyways.

Discussion?[]

I'm not too fond of the "Comments" (visible at the bottom of each page) and that the "Discussion" section usually found between the "article" and "edit" is only visible if you edit the article. How can I get the "Discussion" section back to the front page and disable the "Comments" section? In my opinion, what makes a difference between the two? Besides one makes all wikis look like a forum and not a comprehensive/serious place where we can attract new users to show that we are trying to build a comprehensive site, while the other one will have serious inquires to help improve articles. Thanks, AJona1992 22:17, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

You can turn off Article Comments at Special:WikiaLabs on your wiki. However, I'm not sure this will return the "Discussion to the front page". That's never been part of any skin or feature I can thing of. In the previous skin, we had a tab that linked you to the discussion, that's the closest thing I can think of. On the New Wikia Look it inserts a talk page icon next to the edit button. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 22:49, September 2, 2011 (UTC)
How can I turn it off? I tried clicking on "give feedback" but nothing. Well I was talking about having the "Discussion" section similar to Wikipedia, instead of having to edit a page just to go to the section. AJona1992 22:52, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

Signature codes[]

I tried adding <font color=red>Us</font><font color=green>e</font><font color=blue>r<font color=#66FF00>AJona1992</font> <font color=maroon>Love U Selena</font> to my 'preferences' and it only shows the code instead of this UserAJona1992 Enamorada de Ti

What should I do next?

Did you check the box Custom signature? 02:40, March 7, 2012 (UTC)
User:Nidek/Sig1 23:37, September 2, 2011 (UTC).
You should also put quotation marks around the values (red, green, blue and #66FF00). The <font> tag is no longer fully supported, so you might want to use <span style="font-color:red;">Us<span> etc. instead. -- Deltaneos (talk) 00:04, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
I tried doing so, but there's a limit? <font color=red>Us</font><font color=green>e</font><font color=blue>r<font color=#66FF00>AJona1992</font> [[User talk:AJona1992|<font color=maroon>Love U Selena 00:35, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
I don't think you've ticked the "Custom signature" box. Could you make sure you do that? It sometimes won't tick if you don't have the quotation marks around the values, but the following should fix that.
<font color="red">Us</font><font color="green">e</font>r<font color="#66FF00">AJona1992</font> <font color="maroon">Love U Selena</font> should fit, but contains deprecated HTML.
To bypass the character limit you can create a page like User:AJona1992/signature with <span style="color:red">Us</span><span style="color:green">e</span>r<span style="color:#66FF00">AJona1992</span> <span style="color:maroon">Love U Selena</span> and put in the signature field. The downside is you'll need to create the "User:AJona1992/signature" page on every wiki you edit. -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:35, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
Or you could just use this code:

in the sig field.User:Mythrun/SigCode

A lot of issues with Selena Wiki[]

Hello, I am the admin for the Selena Wikipedia however, there's a lot of issues that still have not been resolved. (1) if you look here you can see at the "Notes" section that the URL is exposed while the given name for the URL is also exposed with the URL. How can I remove the URL from being exposed while leaving the name intact with the URL? Example: Ref#4 has "Jose Behar, interview" with a link. However, right below it shows the webpage exposed. (2) How can I disable "Comments" from Selena Wiki? (3) Is there anyway the "Discussion" tab can be brought back to the wiki? If not, can I create a proposal for this as it seems momentous to help create a thriving community wiki for discussions on improvement on a specific article? (4) How can I create a Selena to look like like this?. Also I am not an expert on coding so can you please simplify the way you respond, if that's not too much to ask :). I am also very sorry if this is too much to ask :/ just need these fix before promotion of Selena Wiki is a go. Thanks, <font color=red>Us</font><font color=green>e</font><font color=blue>r<font color=#66FF00>AJona1992</font> [[User talk:AJona1992|<font color=maroon>Love U Selena 18:24, September 13, 2011 (UTC) (btw sorry for my username I still don't know how to perform codes)

So:
  1. That's a Special:Contact issue,
  2. Special:WikiaLabs,
  3. Disabling comments should return it,
  4. Go to this page, follow the instructions, then upload the resulting XML to your wiki with Special:Import on your wiki.
  5. +1 Please tick the box Custom signature (Check this box to create a custom signature in the field above. The signature uses the same wiki markup that a regular page does, including links.) in your preferences.

  • Comments (1) I contacted them, (2) that page does not show me how to disable them, (4) I don't see any instructions except codes; am I supposed to copy and paste it somewhere? (5) it reads "Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags." Thanks for replying.
1. They will email you in a few days,
2. Are you an admin?
4. First, type "Category:Selena" into the "Add pages from category" box. Then, remove everything from the list that appears, save for Template:Selena. Finally, click "Export" and save the XML and eventually follow the import process.User:TK-999/sig2 19:14, September 13, 2011 (UTC)
5. Your sig seems to be too long (200+ characters).User:TK-999/sig2 19:14, September 13, 2011 (UTC)
Yes I am an admin. I disabled the Comments from my wiki however the others are still a concern. <font color=blue>AJona1992</font>yo! <font color=maroon><3 Selena 06:26, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
The contact request will be answered by Wikia Staff in a few days. And secondly, try to execute the export–import by opening the Wikipedia page in a new tab and continually checking back on my instructions so that you don1t make a mistake. And finally, you should close the last "font" tag in your sig.User:TK-999/sig2 13:54, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Can you tell me this on a step-by-step? I'm still having troubles understanding. Thanks, <font color=blue>AJona1992</font>yo! <font color=maroon><3 Selena 15:15, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Can anyone help? <font color=blue>AJona1992</font>yo! <font color=maroon><3 Selena 15:19, September 15, 2011 (UTC)
Here is the page on Wikipedia that will instruct you on the way to export. Special:Import on your wiki is where you take the resulting XML file to be uploaded. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 21:28, September 16, 2011 (UTC)
Regarding the signature problem, your preferences might require you to put quotation marks around the attribute values before it allows you to tick the custom signature box. e.g. color="red" instead of color=red. -- Deltaneos (talk) 21:48, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

Did not work[]

I performed the import and this does not look anything like this. Did I do something wrong? <font color=blue>AJona1992</font>yo! <font color=maroon><3 Selena 22:27, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

The Navbox template on your Wiki is not the same as the Navbox on Wikipedia's. Wikipedia's template is much more complex, and I'm not suited for handling such type of coding. --DQ13 ~ Let's get dangerous! 20:01, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
Well thanks for replying. Do you know how to make a collapse template similar to Wikipedia? I've some on A.N.T. Farm Wiki. Thanks, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 20:20, September 19, 2011 (UTC)

Update[]

There's still a reference problem on the wiki. Also is there a collapsible template that is equivalent from Wikipedia that I can use? Thanks, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 22:49, September 22, 2011 (UTC)

On the page of Dulce Amor i could easily change links to fit under a line of text by removing space between the line of text and the hyperlink. With ul class="wikia-menu-button" tag you will get drop down menu options. Use li tag to add more lines to the drop down menu, see source of my sig for more info
WikiPim
What? Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 20:05, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

Update 2[]

I now need help STILL with the way the references are shown. I also need help with collapsible template. Thanks, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 23:22, September 29, 2011 (UTC)

Image errors on main page[]

How can I remove the text "Error: image is invalid or non-existent" on the Main Page? Also how can I remove "" from "This Month's Featured Article" and others displayed on the main page? Thank you, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 19:25, September 19, 2011 (UTC)

I do believe it is a problem with the Templates that make up the Front Page (Main Page subpanel). I'm looking at it right now. --DQ13 ~ Let's get dangerous! 19:34, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 19:40, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
Yup, I got it fixed. Some parts of the coding existed on the Wiki where the template was derived from, but did not exist on your Wiki. I removed that part, which fixed the problem. --DQ13 ~ Let's get dangerous! 19:42, September 19, 2011 (UTC)
Well thank you for fixing the problem. Really appreciated! Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 19:47, September 19, 2011 (UTC)

New layout[]

Just updated it :). AJona1992 (talk) 04:03, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

Main Page templates[]

Hello I am currently in the middle of updating the Selena Wiki. I was looking at other wikis such as this one for instance that has an attractive yellow-colored box. I copied and past all the information here on my parent wiki but as you can see there's a problem, its blank. How can I get what I see on the Jak & Daxter Wiki on the Selena Wiki? Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 20:42, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

It's not enough to copypaste the template. You also need the CSS. Look at the template's source code and you'll see all those CSS classes whose names start with "va-portal-". You need those as well. They're in w:c:jakanddaxter:MediaWiki:Common.css. -- User:Pecoes/sig
So I would need to copypaste the following codes from the link you provided? Okay, but to where? Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 21:05, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

Take a look at the cheatsheet, please! -- User:Pecoes/sig

Even though that page does not tell me step-by-step, I have copied the code into the highlighted one and saved it. I guess it will take some time before it will show on the main page. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 21:23, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
It's not working =( Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 22:15, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it does:
File:Va-portal.png
MediaWiki:Wikia.css is fine, but I wouldn't have copypasted everything if I was you. You only need the stuff that starts with "va-portal-" and maybe not even all of that. The rest is just clutter.
You should in any case do a little fine tuning to the class "va-portal-section-body":
.va-portal-section-body {
    background-color: #FFF59C;
    border: 1px solid #AAAAAA;
    padding: 3px 5px;
    vertical-align: top;
    width: 100%;
}

The yellow background color and the gray foreground color of your wiki have too little contrast. You might want to remove the background-color or set the foreground color to black. -- User:Pecoes/sig
Done! But where would I need to post this on my wiki? Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 22:35, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
body {color:black;}
h1 {color:#00ff00;}
p.ex {color:rgb(0,0,255);}
</style>
</head>

Template:Ri Okay. Let's start over. You need the stuff that starts with "va-portal-". Forget what I said earlier about maybe not needing everthing. Let's just say - for the sake of simplicity - that you need all of this:

/* ################################################## */
/* ### PORTALS                                    ### */
/* ################################################## */

/* Columns */
.va-portal-columns-left {
   float: left;
   margin-right: -275px;
   position: relative;
   width: 100%;
}

.va-portal-columns-left-inner {
   margin-right: 275px;
}

.va-portal-columns-right {
   clear: right;
   float: right;
   position: relative;
   width: 265px;
}

.va-portal-columns-below {
   clear: both;
}

/* Content boxes */
.va-portal-section {
   background: transparent;
   border: 1px solid #AAA;
   box-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #AAA;
   -moz-box-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #AAA;
   -webkit-box-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #AAA;
   margin-bottom: 5px;
   margin-top: 0px;
   width: 100%;
}

.va-portal-section-body {
   border: 1px solid #AAA;
   background-color: #FFF59C;
   padding: 3px 5px;
   vertical-align: top;
   width: 100%;
}

.va-portal-section-header {
   /* Shared background; see top of page */
   border: 1px solid #AAA;
   color: #000;
   font-size: 14px;
   font-weight: bold;
   padding: 3px 5px;
   text-align: left;
}

.va-portal-section-header-links {
   float: right;
   font-size: 10px;
   font-weight: normal;
}

/* Cellspacing */
.va-portal-spacing-h, .va-portal-spacing-v {
   background: transparent;
}

.va-portal-spacing-h {
   border-right: 1px solid #FFF;
   width: 0%;
}

.va-portal-spacing-v {
   font-size: 1px;
   height: 1px;
   line-height: 0;
}

/* TOC */
.va-portal-toc {
   font-size: 95%;
   width: 100%;
}

.va-portal-toc td {
   padding: 0 5px;
   vertical-align: top;
}

.va-portal-toc p {
   border-bottom: 1px solid #AAA;
   font-weight: bold;
}

/* Featured articles */
.va-portal-featuredarticle-footer {
   border-top: 1px solid #AAA;
   clear: both;
   margin-top: 10px;
   text-align: right;
}

/* Did you know */
.va-portal-dyk p {
   margin: 0;
}

.va-portal-dyk-item {
   padding: 0 0 0 15px;
   position: relative;
}

.va-portal-dyk .va-portal-dyk-dots {
   float: left;
   margin-left: -15px;
   width: 15px;
}

And you should edit "va-portal-section-body".

You could either remove the background-color:

.va-portal-section-body {
   border: 1px solid #AAA;
   padding: 3px 5px;
   vertical-align: top;
   width: 100%;
}

Or add a foreground-color:

.va-portal-section-body {
   border: 1px solid #AAA;
   background-color: #FFF59C;
   color: black;
   padding: 3px 5px;
   vertical-align: top;
   width: 100%;
}

-- User:Pecoes/sig

Alright done! So how long does it take? Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 22:49, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
Hard to tell. I would recommend purging the page and reloading it. That way you'll see the results right away. The easiest way is to install the PurgeButton gadget. Then pick "Refresh" from the "Edit" dropdown button and you should see the latest version in a matter of moments. -- User:Pecoes/sig
Alright done! BTW can you stick around just in case it doesn't work? Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 23:10, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

Ouch okay =) Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 00:18, August 29, 2012 (UTC)

This is still not working can anybody look into this and see why? Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 13:19, August 29, 2012 (UTC)

Be a little more specific please. The template as such looks fine. Do you have a problem using it? -- User:Pecoes/sig
Yes the main page does not look like this. Best, Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 13:50, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
No, it doesn't. Is it supposed to? Your wiki has a different color palette than w:c:jakanddaxter:. If you leave the template as is, it won't fit. You might want to get rid of all that yellow in the template. Or use this as an opportunity to rethink your wiki's palette. Either way: You will have to make some design choices. -- User:Pecoes/sig
I'm wiling to do whatever it takes to get it looking like theirs. Jonayo! Selena 4Ever 14:11, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
There are three things, I'd recommend then:
  1. Learn the basics of CSS - if you haven't already done so.
  2. Use Firefox with the Firebug extension. You will be able to click on any element on the page and choose "Inspect with Firebug" from the context menu. That'll show you all the CSS rules that are applied to that element and allow you to modify them without actually editing the page or the stylesheet. That's great for testing things out.
  3. Get in contact with the maker(s) of the main page of w:c:jakanddaxter:. They'll know the ins and outs of their design better than anyone and might be able to help you with the details.

Template:Ri Never mind I will never learn how to do that. Do you know how to add another row here? I would like to add another box to the right so it won't be so empty. Best, Jonatalk 2 me 16:39, August 29, 2012 (UTC)

Check the page! I've added another panel at the bottom right. -- User:Pecoes/sig
Thank you! But do you know how to move the main page? For an example, the main page seemed to have moved sightly to the right. Best, Jonatalk 2 me 16:50, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
The left column was set to 55% and the right to 45%. It said so in w:c:selenaquintanilla:Template:Main_Page_subpanel -- User:Pecoes/sig
That page doesn't exist. Would you mind fixing it for me? Jonatalk 2 me 17:00, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
The page exists. I mistyped the link though. It's corrected now. -- User:Pecoes/sig
I would have to rest them to 0%? Jonatalk 2 me 17:06, August 29, 2012 (UTC)

Template:RiI've already set the width' to 50%. Leave them as they are. -- User:Pecoes/sig

Ok, btw one more thing how can I shrink the size of this template to 55%? Jonatalk 2 me 17:25, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
Set the width to 55%. -- User:Pecoes/sig
I'm sorry but that link you keep linking to me is too complex for me to understand. So where would I have to place the width in the template? Jonatalk 2 me 17:52, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry as well. If you don't want to learn anything and if I have to do absolutely everything for you, then this thread has come to an end. -- User:Pecoes/sig
The link you provided does not help me at all, all I see is "try it yourself" umm what am I supposed to do there its a simple how to website for beginners its more of a complex how to website for advanced users. So I'm not sure how you expect me to learn from a level where I do not understand. Jonatalk 2 me 14:58, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Template:Ri Actually I did start with the W3Schools tutorial and found it very useful at the time. But to each his own. There must be plenty of good CSS tutorials out there. If not millions. These are the first two hits I got when I googled for CSS for beginners:

  1. http://www.htmldog.com/guides/cssbeginner/
  2. http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/771/CSS-For-Beginners

Both seem pretty good to me. -- User:Pecoes/sig
