Biography[]

Selena has a movie starring Jennifer "JLo" Lopez as the singer, and the new series which is in Netflix starring The Walking Dead and Twilight star, Christian Serratos.

Personal Life[]

Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas and grew up in Corpus Christi, where she began her musical career. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr, was a singer with the original Los Dinos from 1957 to 1972, and nurtured the burgeoning musical talent of his children. Selena, her brother A.B. III (bass), and their sister, Suzette (drums), were a second generation of Los Dinos. Its other two members who started in the band were Ricky Vela on keyboards and Roger Garcia on guitar.

Selena made her first public appearance at her father's Mexican restaurant in Lake Jackson at eight and recorded her first record at nine. Throughout her adolescence, Selena was constantly on tour. She finished high school by mail and lived most of her life on the tour bus "Big Bertha". She completed her education via correspondence courses. The singer signed with Capitol EMI in 1989, and released several albums with that label, including 1994's hit album Amor Prohibido, which knocked Gloria Estefan's Mi Tierra off the number one spot.

Career[]

Chris Pérez replaced Roger Garcia as guitar player. A romance budded between Perez and Selena, and the two married on April 2nd, 1992. Even as Selena's career skyrocketed, she remained very close to her family, choosing to live next door to them in Corpus Christi.

In 1994, Selena won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album from her 1993 Selena Live! .

She holds the record of drawing the largest concert crowd – over 67,000 fans – in the history of the Houston Astrodome, for her 1993 performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It is erroneously believed that her largest crowd at the Astrodome was the famed 1995 concert, which was performed almost over a month before her death. She drew over 64,000 fans, breaking her own record for the third year in a row.

Selena's musical career was predominantly renowned for singing in her second language, Spanish. She grew up speaking English, but began recording her early Spanish hits phonetically to reach broader audiences.

Aside from her singing, Selena had a strong passion for fashion. Her official boutique named Selena Inc. ETC. Boutique & Salon opened in Corpus Christi and San Antonio during 1994. She also appeared as a cameo in the Johnny Depp film “Don Juan DeMarco” the same year.

Death[]

On March 31, 1995 Yolanda called Selena allegedly telling her she was rape and beaten. The next morning Selena picked Yolanda up and took her to the hospital. The doctors later could not find signs of abuse of Yolanda allegations. She had lied. Selena and Yolanda would get into a argument to the hotel. While in the hotel Selena and Yolanda got into a argument and which Selena told Yolanda they was no longer friends and gave her the ring back. This would trigger Yolanda and she grabbed a handgun where Selena tried to flee. That's when she fired one fatal shot, hitting her in her higher back. She ran for safety where Yolanda tried to chase after her allegedly calling her a bi*** before being recognized by guests. Selena ran into the lobby and collapsed. One of the hotel workers call the ambulance in a 911 call. Selena's last words were "Yolanda... 158" before going into cardiac arrest.

Yolanda tried to escape the scene in a car where security spotted her, ordering her to pull over which she did. Ambulance transported Selena to a local hospital where they would perform surgery on her. Selena ultimately could not be saved because of substantial blood loss and was pronounced dead at the age of 23 years old. Throughout the day witnesses would watch Yolanda in a car with a gun to her head while cops tried to safe her life. She was arrested soon after.

Legacy[]

There is a museum to honor Selena, holding all of her awards, stage outfits, car, & records. A life-sized statue of Selena was built on Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi called “Mirador de La Flor”.

In 1997, Jennifer "JLo" Lopez starred in the biographic film “Selena” as the late Queen of Tejano. Selena's fans embraced the touching biography, and Lopez's role in Selena catapulted her to fame.

Selena's popularity is continuously proven by the fact that her music still surpasses many modern artists today. In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records, in 2003 (she had previously graced the book's pages as the "most dominating artist"), considered adding her to their pages as being the only celebrity who continues to compete with today's top pop stars.
